I want– no … I “NEED” to thank you guys for helping me solve a mystery, which has plagued me since my childhood in the early 1970s. I’m literally trying hard to suppress the tears welling up in my eyes as I type this.
Mr. Peters’ song, “Going in Circles,” as performed by The Friends of Distinction, has been one of my favorite tracks of my entire life. I’ve owned or listened to it on CD, cassette, wax (both 45 and LP/33), 8-track, and even reel-to-reel! Foolishly, in pre-pandemic years, I’d even tried it a few times at karaoke! LOL! And while my renditions of the song have generally met with positive reception, the ONE thing that has stuck in my craw – SINCE the very early 70s – is my uncertainty of a particular lyric. There is a place in the song, following where Mr. Floyd Butler croons the abstract metaphor of being a faceless clock with timeless hopes that never stop, where the precise lyrics have always eluded me. It always sounded to me to be something akin to, “Lord, when I feel that way, ohhhhh my soul, my soul is stayed …” Still, I was never convinced that that was right. And I have listened to that song countless times, replaying that section over and over, all to no avail. Since the advent of lyrics becoming available on the Internet, I have checked out many sites and seen the lyrics that they provided. And while many of them are the same (I suspect owing to them drawing from the same incorrect source), even where some sites have slightly different lyrics, those, too, were (obviously, in a few cases) incorrect. So, once my mental lightbulb finally switched on, I got the idea of tracking down Mr. Peters to investigate whether there was ever an interview, or performance, or published writing, or anything else I could find, where HE could shed some light onto this enduring mystery and cold case. And that is what brought me to your site and the discovery of “Blueprint for Discovery.” Finding nine tracks, but only listenable media for one, I was fearful that I had again struck out. So you can imagine my elation to hear Mr. Peters, himself, session-playing the song, and almost “talking” through the lyrics (kind of reminiscent of how Barry White would kind of “talk-sing” his way through his hit songs, LOL) in a manner that may it possible for me to much better discern the idea and words Mr. Peters was seeking to convey in that lyric. For me (and thanks to you), today is a day of great satisfaction and celebration! 🙂 I think I might come out of karaoke retirement next week, or the week thereafter, to gleefully disregard what I see on the screen and share my newfound lyrics with some drunken audience. LOL! Again, thank you all so much!
